I still remember the excitement of anticipation on Christmas Day when I would be looking forward to a Coco Pops and Fruit Loops breakfast, the only day of the year that our breakfast would differ from the usual Weet Bix. I remember the ritual of sitting and watching Doctor Who with my brothers. I remember coming home after the Christmas Eve midnight service and being able to open one present before we went to bed, and trying to guess the 'right' one.
Traditions are important to a family. They tell a story of what is important. They provide a connection and a sense of belonging. Friends talk about morning pancakes made by dad every election day, technology free, 'story telling' nights each Saturday, family outings to volunteer at homeless shelters each Christmas.
I am looking forward to helping create our own family traditions, and to see how they evolve as we all grow up. It is a beautiful thing to be able to do this. To set in stone, through ritual, what your family is about.
A beautiful and important thing to do.
