Part 1: Got up early and headed out to ride to Eagle Park trails, just outside Adelaide. This is where the National Champs take place in a few weeks. Nice flowing trails, some steep hills and great views made for an enjoyable hour ride.
Hard to see Eagle Park goodness... it was early!
Part 2: Left Adelaide heading for Victor Harbor. We stopped off at a massive play ground where the kids had a great time. I took off on the road bike, riding through Maclaren wine country towards the town of Willunga, where I would meet Em and the kids. The aim was to ride up Old Willunga Hill, which features on the penultimate stage of the Tour Down Under. I was attacking the 4 km after a 20 km cruise through the vineyards, as opposed to the pros who go up there twice, the first time after 100 km in their legs.
It’s a nice climb, a steady gradient with some wonderful views. I was probably going at least 15 km an hour slower than the pros but looking at the supporters markings which were still on the road after this year’s Tour, it was quite a nice ride to do, just to do it (if that makes sense?)
Back down to the pretty town of Willunga and a great coffee. Perhaps the next time I will be here will be to cheer on the Tour riders and share the atmosphere with thousands of others.
