One of the true joys you get to experience as your children get older is the sharing of your loves. There is a special part of your heart that melts during those moments when you are together, sharing a joy, just being.
A month ago I bought my two a couple of Wee-ride balance bikes. We had used the Wee-rider kids carriers that attach to your adult bike, and they were great so, since the local bike shop had them in stock I thought “why not”. The kids were both on bikes with trainer wheels, and we were going to go through the process of starting the whole balancing part with Jackson over this summer. The idea of the balance bikes is that, as they don’t have pedals (you simply scoot along using your feet) all the kids have to worry about is, you guessed it, their balance.
The huge upsides for me with these bikes is that you don’t have to put up with that horrible noise that those trainer wheels make, you can go down some rough tracks and, probably because of the previous points, the kids absolutely love them! They pick up the balance aspect of rising really quickly, so much so that I think both of them, with a little encouragement, could ride on a pedal bike pretty soon.
There are plenty of balance bikes on the market now. The Wee-riders are well made and certainly offer everything you would want.
So the answer to the question of what would you like to do today is more often than not, ‘Go mountain biking!’ Now, that is music to dad’s ears!
And off we go, flying down singletrack with my little girl pretending she is in a race, chatting to herself all the way down, and Jack yelling back “Dad, did you see that jump?!” and always wanting to show me an instant replay of any ‘crash’ he has.
We have a little skills park near our place, with some little jumps, some sweeping berms, a see-saw and some log rides. We could spend hours there.
And every now and then I get to show off “Daddy, do the see-saw again.”.... “Weee, that’s GREAT Dad!”
Then I show off on the log ride and fall off, still clipped in, and land on my head, with the bike on top of me.
“You ok Dad! That was a BIG crash!”
“Your dad’s just trying to keep up.”
Get used to it kids. Get used to it.
