Freedom
I'm one of the fortunate few in this world. I have true freedom. Economic, social, religious, political. Freedom. It's important to recognise that. We take it for granted, which allows us to complain about taxes, work, and even people who try to seek asylum here so they can experience my freedom.
Others would do anything to have the things I complain about.
So I think I have a responsibility that goes hand in hand with the freedom I enjoy. A few thoughts:
- I lose an element of my freedom when I buy into the latest and greatest. I spend, I have to work more, I use more resources (often precious), and I lose the freedom of time.
- If I use the freedoms given me to simply get the best for me, what do I leave my children's generation, and their children's generation? So a continued economic growth model ensures I have a nice standard of living and end up with a good superannuation fund. But will it also leave my kids with not being able to afford a house and have to deal with a world that's completely stuffed?
- I can't enjoy cheap imported goods that are produced at the expense of someone else's freedom. Can I!
- I need to stand up more for those less fortunate. Write letters, support causes, walk the talk.
- I have the freedom to work, to create, to love, to help, to improve. To do.
