Do you remember?
Remember some of the dreams you had when you were a kid? I remember at one stage I was going to be a fighter pilot in the airforce (it was the era of Top Gun).
In general, my dreams were about exploration, adventure, making an impact.
As a teenager, the dreams for my future didn't constitute a working week, paying off a mortgage and perhaps having a little money to spend. It didn't involve looking at junk mail to see what useless stuff I could spend our money on, or watching other people play out interesting lives on tv.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for financial restraint, making sure my family is provided for. But that doesn't mean we should lose sight of our dreams. In my dreams when I was growing up, I was fearless, adventurous, creative. The world was my oyster. I didn't worry about what other people thought. I didn't think my dreams had to be accepted. They were mine.
I think it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking you're not worthy of following your dreams, that it will probably end in tears, that you don't have the skills, that you're not sure your enthusiasm will last.
What happened to that kid from all those years ago? When did he decide that he'd let all the other 'stuff' get in the way? When did he decide that for this life, well, it's best to play it safe?
Do you remember?
Dream big.
