I read an article a year or so ago about how, when we are on a cycling trip, we accept inconveniences as part of, and sometimes an important part of, an adventure. Trying to find a place to sleep at night when you decided to keep riding for too long and before you realise, the sun has set The challenges of getting daily distances right so you make it to the next 'supply town' without starving. The complexities of loading up your bags with food once you are at these towns. Working out the best way of getting from A to Z. Turning up to a restuarant completely wet through.
At the time we may not recognise that you truly enjoy these experiences, but on reflection, you realise that it was these types of experiences that made the trip, that taught you more about yourself, what is important to you, how you want your life to be.
Yet, when you return to our 'day to day', the idea of loading up a back pack full of shopping, or deciding to ride a bike or find the best route via public transport to a friend's house you have not been to before, seems completely inconvenient, so you get into the car. In doing so, move further away from the adventure that brought you so much.
Blame lack of time, or expectations, or...
So I am going to find some daily adventures. I'm going to ride to work more often, even if it is wet, or my shirt may get crumpled. I'm going to leave the house and go for a walk somewhere I have not been to before (and maybe even get lost).
Embrace the inconvenience, find an adventure.
