Statistics are nice. I got a new cycle computer when I bought my first road bike a couple of years ago. It's nice to go for a ride and get some feedback at the end. To see the kilometres adding up.
What they don't show you are those beautifully still mornings as you cruise through vineyards riding in the middle of a bunch, the sense of flying down a hill faster than most cars would go when you as the thought runs through your head,"did I tighten the front wheel enough?", the sense of focus when you are trying to hold the wheel in front of you as the bunch begins to put the hurt down, the pain through the legs as you slowly inch up yet another hill, the pure joy of that first post ride sip of coffee.
The stats are only the blurb at the back of the book. It's when you turn the pages that the story comes to life.
