OK, I must admit that I was one of those people who believed Canberra was a bit of a ho hum kind of city, what with those pollies and all that (this of course is very hypocritical of me as I am a bit of a political junkie). Have to say, great place.
It does help if you are a keen mountain biker and have a brother in law (thanks Ricey!) to show you some great areas to ride. And we didn’t even get to the famous Stromlo as it was closed due to damage caused by the recent rains.
The city itself is set up in a series of satellite suburbs, with lots of open, green space between them. So whereas in other cities, to get from one place to another you would be moving through suburbia, here you move through open countryside. This makes it a little difficult to get yourself orientated within the city, but makes traveling around a really pleasant experience. Added to all this are the wonderful public buildings to experience, from Parliament House, to the War Memorial.
And of course, the added bonus for us was enjoying the wonderful hospitality and fun of the “Ricey’s”.
On one of the last nights, Andrew took me for a bike ride into the city and around Lake Burley Griffin It really gave me an appreciation for the place. Beautiful waterways, stately public buildings with no sky scrapers jutting into the sky. Stunning parks, easy cycling access, it was even warm!!! Made me wonder whether anyone did cycle tours in Canberra, and if not, why not?
I’m looking forward to the next trip to our Capital!
