Taste
I've been thinking about the idea of backing yourself for some time. I have to really fight against the need to second guess myself, to over think things through, to think negative. It can be a hard thing to say 'I like this and I think it is the right thing to do' and then go for it.
It's hard because you could be wrong. It's hard because, even if you are right there will be people who think you are wrong. It's hard because it may be right but when you carry it out, well, the results can be pretty pathetic.
I read a great quote from Ira Glass, who talks about good taste. You see, if you get into creating things, you do so because you have good taste. You know a good photo, a brilliant piece of art, an eloquent narrative, a delightful garden, a great design. And then you do it yourself.
And your work falls short of your expectations.
It does this because of your good taste.
Ira explains that this is when people give up. And I guess all those 'second guesses' come in to play here. But what you need to do is keep going, better your craft, learn, and most importantly, do.
And if you do, you begin to close the gap between your product and your taste.
You'll get there.
You just have to fight through.
Go on.
Back yourself.
